It depends on the quality of directories. We have to look for the human edited directories not only automated generated directories.

There are all types in the directories, some are very high quality and having a excellent content and looks good in appearance, you'll also find directories having a low quality content on it's pages and looks poor in appearance as well.

Always find a quality directory to submitt your website for the good results.
